Government

Has government in America become a spectator sport? Two distinct teams seem to have emerged from the materialist boom of the 1990s. The Left Team and the Right Team. Through the omnipresent media, Americans seem to be detached observers of decisions made for them by their team's win or loss. "Oh, gosh, another advocate for the control of women and the oppression of the poor by big business has gotten on the Supreme Court. That Right Team is sure tough. We'll get 'em in the next round!" This, I can only surmise, could be the internal monologue of the passive poor women in this society. I certainly cannot hear their voices, unless those gun shots being fired by their adolescent male children are a sign of their rage. Government is supposed to SERVE the people. Not the other way around. In my practice, I struggle with the issue of government in my life. While I would like to totally detach myself from its corruption, I also feel it is necessary for me to practice good citizenship in concert with those in my community who are also trying to do the same.
