Safety
A roof of an ice rink collapsed under falling snow today in a small town in Germany. Twenty are missing of the approximately 50 people inside. Safety is a human illusion. Look into the eyes of a non-human animal on the street or in the woods. Really look. Do you see a sense of safety in those eyes? Study the eyes of humans on a subway train or in a restaurant. As a species, human beings are capable of losing their natural guarding instincts. In my practice, I try to get in touch with those instincts to remind myself of how amazing my human existence is. I am propelled through subway tunnels at high speed in a metal box, and I read a book calmly. I sleep soundly in a structure which would kill me if it collapsed. Awareness of the true absence of safety helps me cherish my being in the moment.
