Spacey Spacey

Kevin Spacey is a talented performer, regardless of his personal issues. In fact, expecting sober maturity in an actor is like expecting a puppy to not piss on the floor. Actors, especially mood-centered American actors, must retain a certain primitive nature to do what they do well. This has been widely analyzed and documented.

I believe that Kevin Spacey's sexuality is really none of my business. I also believe that sexuality between any consenting adults is none of anyone's business but those engaged in that activity. This is the basis of the early advances of legal protection of homosexuals from corrupt and bigoted police, who used to invade private bedrooms to sadistically punish and/or shake down gay men.

Pedophilia is a legal matter today. Kevin Spacey has found himself in the floodlights of pop media scrutiny. He is being condemned in some quarters as a pedophile. Who is labelled "pedophile" varies from place to place. In more sexually repressed societies in North America, the age of consent under law is higher by years than in less repressed societies.  Consent, on the other hand, is consent.

Spacey has outed himself superfluously under the pressure of pedophilia allegations. I would venture to say that his being gay has been no secret for a long time. His powerful portrayal of a sexually conflicted U.S. President in House of Cards came as no surprise to me. But then again, I see Iago in Shakespeare's Othello in a similar light. The vengeful repressed homosexual is not an invention of fiction or drama. Unfortunately, his/her viciousness is often portrayed as innate rather than resulting from social oppression.

Spacey's current troubles are of his own making in 2017. Coming out with publicist fanfare today is laughable. I speak as a 'commoner' who came out in 1970 with dire repercussions. Spacey's use of that fanfare to obscure allegations that he had behaved inappropriately toward a young person is worse than laughable.

Spacey was gifted with great personal talent. His talent has been recognized in light of his developed skill in applying that talent. . He has reaped the elevated lifestyle of a global celebrity. His use of coming out as gay in order to justify his abuse of celebrity and privilege is despicable. This does not speak badly of him as a homosexual. It speaks badly of him as a human being.
